2″ x 4″ piece scrap chipboard
Gripster® craft knife (Elmer’s® X-ACTO®)
Old newspapers
Saw tooth hanger
Hammer
Pencil
Ruler
Glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions

  1. Use hammer to attach saw tooth hanger to top, center back of canvas. For cylinder, use Foam Cutter to cut STYROFOAM™ Rod to 10″ length. To lay flat against canvas, cut 1/2″ thick slice off full 10” length of cylinder. To horizontally cover cylinder, cut birch ribbon into six 2″ x 7″ lengths. Use glue gun to horizontally attach one strip toward top, rounded side of cylinder. Glue next strip, slightly overlapping first one. Continue gluing strips to cover cylinder. Also fit strip to top and bottom of cylinder, trimming as needed, and glue.
  2. Refer to photo to place cylinder about 1” up and 1 1/2″ in from lower left corner of canvas. Use pencil to lightly trace around it. Remove and set aside cylinder,
  3. Cover work surface with newspapers. Use craft stick to spread generous amount of stucco over sides and about 1/3 of canvas front at top. (Tip: To create cracks, apply stucco at least 1/8″ thick so that it will intentionally crack when dried.) To add texture to applied stucco (top and sides), fold scrap chipboard in half and press into stucco using up and down motion. Similarly apply stucco to middle and then bottom areas of canvas, texturizing with chipboard. (Note: Do not cover traced area where column will go, but do slightly cover pencil marks blending stucco into area.)
  4. Refer to photo to copy placement of bricks. While stucco canvas is still wet, gently set bricks into position. (Note: Rows of bricks are staggered. Along edge and where cylinder will be, cut bricks in half as needed.) With one brick at a time, apply stucco to all sides except front and set back down into stucco. (Note: Stucco on bricks look like mortar.) Let dry overnight, until thoroughly dry.
  5. In a well-ventilated, newspaper-covered area, spray all four edges with medium amount of Hickory spray stain. Then, apply a very light coat, of spray all over canvas and bricks. Place canvas flat on surface and position nozzle only slightly above bottom right corner of canvas. Spray medium amount of stain, spraying across canvas so that it creates shading on bottom and right side of each brick or brick areas. It will also shade the stucco to created shadows and contrast. Optional: To darken bricks, add additional spray only to fronts of bricks to slightly darken, as needed. To add shading to cylinder, spray bottom and sides. Let dry. Use glue gun attach cylinder to canvas.
  6. To insert twigs at center back of cylinder, make small slits with craft knife and insert twigs, trimming lengths with wire cutter if needed. Push eucalyptus stem in front of twigs.
  7. Glue small bits of moss to tops of bricks. Also glue tufts of moss in a few cracks of stucco. Note: If cracks or stucco pieces break off, simply glue back on.
