Instructions

  1. Use computer internet to search for copyright free vintage Halloween images. Size images to approximately 6″ – 7″ x 10″.) Print on copy paper. Set aside.
  2. Use pencil, metal ruler and Foam Cutter to mark and cut STYROFOAM™ block in half, creating two (approx.) 9″ x 12″ pieces.
  3. To carve, use Foam Cutter to cut along one panel’s front, outside edge (along the pointed, 90 degree edge) with 1 1/2 – 3” irregular scallops, similar to the way you would pare an apple. Similarly, cut scallops in the other long and one short side, notching other short side a little less, since it will be the bottom.) Use same technique on back, cutting all three sides and less deeply on bottom. Then, go back along outside edges to cut away pieces right on edge that will make profile less straight. Brush and smooth away any crumbs. To compresses foam, use fingers and press edges. Repeat to carve other panel.
  4. In well-ventilated, newspaper-covered area, spray panels with several light coats of Flat Black. Let dry. To add texture, spray with Color Tex, allowing some of Black to show through. (Tip: To hold while spraying all sides and edges, insert pencil into bottom and set into short drinking glass. Let dry completely.
  5. To shade, spray edges with Black. Also, lightly spatter-spray edges of Halloween prints, to shade. Let dry. Gently crumple each print, carefully scrunching in center and working toward outside to prevent tearing. Carefully open and flatten.
  6. Apply glue stick to back of one Halloween print. Align and press onto panel and smooth with fingers, though cracks and irregular surface should still show. (Note: Top and bottom margins may be narrower than sides.) Let dry. Repeat with other panel.
  7. To embellish, press upholstery nail in each corner of each print. (To secure, remove, apply hot glue of glue gun to tip of upholstery nail and press back into panel.) On each panel, use glue gun to attach one charm to each top right and bottom left corner of prints.
  8. Display panels with scattered straw and decorative pumpkins to complete arrangement.
