FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam
Block, 1 3/16″ x 9 7/8″ x 11 7/8″
Design It:® Wire Cutter

Other Materials:
Soda bottles, three 9″ tall
Thick hair ties, elastic, assorted colors, 9 – 12 (depending on thickness*)
Silk flowers, three 3″ diameter x 18″ long, white
Bamboo skewers, four 6″ length
Design Master® ColorTool® spray color, Olive Bright
Plastic lid, 1 1/4″ diameter (like a large glue stick cap – to make holes)
Cutting mat (or stack of newspapers
Paperclips, two large

Tools:
Ruler, pencil, serrated knife, large cardboard box,
old newspapers, and glue gun & glue sticks

 * Note: Hair ties must be thick enough to prevent bottles from falling through shelf)

Instructions:

  1. Use ruler and pencil to draw a line down middle, creating two approx. 5″ x 12″ pieces. On cutting mat, use serrated knife to cut along line. (Note: Cut through foam with several passes of the knife, keeping knife perpendicular to foam so that edge is straight.)
  2. Set one piece aside for now. With the other, measure and mark foam to evenly position three soda bottles. (The marks should be halfway from back to front, about 2 1/2″ in from each end and 3 1/2″ apart.) To cut hole for bottle, center cap on one mark and firmly press in, to cut all the way through. Repeat with other two marks / holes. Then, push soda bottle into one hole and gently twist to expand and smooth until approx. 2″ of the bottle shows from the top.  (Be careful that you don’t push too hard and snap foam.) Repeat with other two holes.
  3. In a well-ventilated, newspaper-covered area (inside box), spray all sides of both pieces of foam with Olive Bright. (Also spray inside holes.) Let dry.
  4. Set foam piece (shelf) with holes on top edge of other piece (support) to see how they will be assembled. Set shelf piece aside. In top edge of support piece, insert four skewers, evenly spaced apart, and going into foam 5″ deep. This leaves 1″ above to hold shelf. Set support on its back on table. Hold shelf up right on its edge and slide it into skewers. Adjust as needed. When the fit is good, separate enough to squeeze hot glue between layers and press back into place, holding for a couple of minutes to be sure the bond is strong.
  5. Insert soda bottle into shelf holes, coming up from bottom. Wrap, twist, and wrap again, each hair tie so that it’s tight on bottle and bottle can’t pull through. Repeat with other two bottles.
  6. Put 18″ flower in center bottle. Use wire cutter to trim about 2″ off other two flower stems and put into other bottles.
  7. For hangers on back of support piece, slightly separate ends of large paper clips, approx. 1/4″. On top back of shelf, 2″ in from ends and 2″ down from top, insert shorter ends into foam, creating hanger loops with longer ends. Hot glue to secure.
