  1. Glue the four sheets STYROFOAM* together, side by side to create a 48” x 36” panel.
  2. Find an image of planet earth.  Have the image enlarged to your desired size.
  3. Trace onto the STYROFOAM™ the outside circle of the planet.
  4. Cut out the pattern sections of land individually, and pin them in place onto the STYROFOAM™, and then trace all sections onto the Styrofoam.  HINT: For an easier and faster way; trace the pattern outline onto transparency film, and use an overhead projector to project the image directly onto the Styrofoam, trace with marker.
  5. When cutting out the planet be sure not to cut out the entire circle, see photo.  The bottom of the planet is left flat where it will meet with the black quilted fabric.  The black quilted fabric portion of the headboard would hang level with the top of the mattress, this quilted portion of the headboard could be cut to any design you choose or as pictured.
  6. All of the land sections of the planet will be raised; all areas of water will be indented.  Use a craft stick to compress the Styrofoam around the outside edge of each section of land about ¼” to 3/8”.  Use the back of a spoon to compress the Styrofoam on all the areas of water, pressing the spoon firmly; leaving the water areas slightly rippled improves the look of the water.
  7. Paint your planet as pictured or as desired and let dry.
  8. Apply three heavy coats of an acrylic sealer to the entire planet, letting each coat dry before applying the next.  This will help protect the headboard from chipping and scratching.
  9. Glue batting to cover the bottom section of the headboard, front and sides.
  10. Glue black fabric to cover batting, wrapping around and gluing at the back.
  11. Cut out your child’s name from the star patterned fabric, and glue in place below the planet.
  12. Use Tulip® dimensional blue paint to outline the letters.

Be sure to hang the headboard securely.  If using Velcro, use a low temp glue gun to glue the Velcro strip to the back of the headboard and pin to secure strip in place.  Poster Putty would not damage your walls, but not have as secure a bond.  Depending on the age of the child, you could glue large picture hangers to the back to hang the headboard above the bed.
